In many swimming pools, unnecessarily large amounts of the backwashing and rinsing water used to clean the pool water filters are discharged into the sewer system. To reduce energy costs and water consumption, Hellebrekers has developed the UFRO system. In addition to swimming pool water, the UFRO installation can also clean and upgrade rainwater for use as flushing water for toilets.

UFRO
UFRO stands for Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis. UFRO is a fine filtration technique used to remove suspended solids, bacteria or fibres from the water. Ultrafiltration is a pretreatment step before Reverse Osmosis, which uses a semi-permeable membrane to further purify the water. In Reverse Osmosis, water is pushed at very high pressure through a screen with microscopic holes. The output from the UFRO process is safe, pure water.
The benefits
Substantial water savings can be achieved by using an UFRO installation. In concrete terms, 70% of the backwashing and rinsing water is purified to the point where it can be used again as replenishment water for the swimming pool. A further benefit is that much less backwashing and rinsing water is wastefully discharged into the sewer, leading to a lower environmental footprint.
